In a forest clearing near Palmiry, on the edge of the Kampinos Forest, the Germans shot prisoners brought mainly from Warsaw's Pawiak prison from December 1939 until at least July 1941. The largest execution, the most notorious episode of the AB Action, took place on 20 and 21 June 1940: 358 people were killed, among them Maciej Rataj, Mieczysław Niedziałkowski and Janusz Kusociński. By today's estimates the executions claimed more than 1,700 victims in all.
