Kedyw

Directorate of Diversion

The Home Army's branch for sabotage, diversion, assassinations and reprisals, formally set up in January 1943. Its first chief was Colonel August Emil Fieldorf 'Nil'.

Kedyw was created by General Stefan Rowecki's order no. 84 of 22 January 1943. It grew mainly out of the Retaliation Union and the 'Wachlarz' organisation, and also took in the Assault Groups of the Grey Ranks and the Secret Military Organisation. Besides the Main Command's Kedyw, each district had its own. It was led until February 1944 by Colonel August Emil Fieldorf 'Nil', then by Lieutenant Colonel Jan Mazurkiewicz 'Radosław'.

Kedyw units blew up tracks and trains, freed prisoners, as in the Arsenal action of March 1943, and carried out the underground's death sentences on officials of the German terror; the best known was the assassination of Franz Kutschera in February 1944. In the Warsaw Uprising, Kedyw's units, including the 'Zośka' and 'Parasol' battalions, fought in the 'Radosław' Group.
