At Sobibór station by the Bug, between Chełm and Włodawa, the second extermination camp of Operation Reinhard began regular operation in early May 1942. Jews were brought here from the Lublin district, as well as from the Reich, Slovakia, France and the Netherlands; historians estimate the number of victims at between about 170,000 and 250,000. On 14 October 1943 the prisoners rose up: about 300 escaped into the forest, and a few dozen survived the war. The camp was then liquidated.
