On 28 August 1939 a bomb hidden in suitcases by Antoni Guzy, acting on behalf of the Abwehr, exploded at Tarnów railway station. Between 20 and 24 people were killed and dozens injured; the victims are sometimes called the first victims of the Second World War. The Wehrmacht took Tarnów on 7 September, and on 14 June 1940 the first mass transport of political prisoners to Auschwitz left from its station.
