Timeline
(1952)1934
The year in brief
For Poland 1934 began with a declaration with Germany: on 26 January the two states undertook not to settle their disputes by force for ten years. In May Poland and the USSR extended their non-aggression pact to the end of 1945. On 30 June Hitler had the leaders of the SA, headed by Röhm, murdered together with old opponents, among them Schleicher; the number of victims is not known. When Hindenburg died on 2 August, Hitler took over his powers as “Führer and Reich Chancellor”, and the soldiers swore obedience to him personally. In Vienna Austrian SS men shot Chancellor Dollfuss, but the putsch failed. In September the USSR joined the League of Nations, and in December Stalin used the murder of Kirov to unleash a wave of repression. In December came the clash at Walwal, which Mussolini made a pretext for war.
