From the spring of 1942 the Lublin district of the General Government was the centre of Operation Reinhard; according to historians' estimates, about 360,000 Jews from the district were murdered in 1942 alone. On 3–4 November 1943 the SS and police shot about 42,000 Jews, the region's last forced labourers, at Majdanek, Trawniki and Poniatowa. In July 1944 Home Army units fought here in Operation Tempest and were then disarmed.
