The extermination camp near Treblinka station, about 80 kilometres north-east of Warsaw, began operating on 23 July 1942, receiving the first transport from the Warsaw Ghetto. By 21 September the Germans had deported 253,742 people here from Warsaw by their own figures, among them Janusz Korczak and the children of the Orphans' Home. Historians most often estimate the total number of victims at 800,000–900,000. After the prisoners' uprising of 2 August 1943, the camp was dismantled in the autumn.
