The capture of Monte Cassino
On 18 May 1944 a patrol of the 12th Podolian Uhlans entered the ruins of the abbey, abandoned by the Germans overnight. The battle of Monte Cassino was over.

The Allies before the Gothic Line
In mid-August 1944 the Allies stood on the Arno and Metauro, before the Gothic Line's outworks. Eighth Army was secretly regrouping on the Adriatic to attack.

The end of the fighting in Italy
On 21 April 1945 the Poles entered Bologna, and on 22–24 April the Allies crossed the Po. The German armies in Italy ceased to exist as a fighting force.
