(1952)1927
The year in brief
In 1927 two struggles for power were decided. In China on 12 April Chiang Kai-shek’s troops and Shanghai gangsters smashed the communist workers’ militias; a purge began that ended the alliance with the Chinese Communist Party. In the USSR in November, after opposition marches on the tenth anniversary of the revolution, Trotsky and Zinoviev were expelled from the party, and Stalin won the struggle for Lenin’s inheritance. On 7 June, at a Warsaw railway station, the White émigré Boris Koverda shot the Soviet envoy Pyotr Voykov. In the Middle East Britain recognised the full independence of Ibn Saud’s kingdom, and in December it recognised Iraq as an independent state, although the mandate continued.
