1929

The year in brief

The year 1929 brought more agreements, and in October a crash. In February the USSR, Poland, Romania, Latvia and Estonia signed the Litvinov Protocol in Moscow, bringing the Kellogg–Briand Pact into force among themselves early; in July the pact came into force, binding 46 states. Mussolini and Cardinal Gasparri signed the Lateran Treaty, which ended Italy’s dispute with the papacy and created the Vatican City State. In August the Young Plan was adopted at The Hague: reparations were spread out until 1988, and the Allies promised to leave the Rhineland by 30 June 1930. On 29 October, “Black Tuesday”, panic gripped the New York Stock Exchange. The crash was the spark and the symbol of a depression that spread to Europe, because its economy depended on American money.
