The Italo-Soviet pact of friendship
On 2 September 1933 Fascist Italy and the USSR concluded a pact of friendship, non-aggression and neutrality in Rome. Both feared Hitler’s Germany.

Szilard and the chain reaction
On 12 September 1933 in London the Hungarian physicist Leó Szilárd conceived the idea of a nuclear chain reaction, later the basis of work on the atomic bomb.
