In September 1939 General Franciszek Kleeberg organised the defence of Polesie from depot units and reservists; his Independent Operational Group “Polesie” capitulated near Kock on 6 October, the last formation of the regular Polish Army. After 17 September the river flotilla at Pińsk scuttled its vessels, and Border Protection Corps units withdrew from Polesie towards the Bug. In July 1944 Operation Tempest lasted here for two weeks.
