Potsdam Conference
The last Big Three conference, at Potsdam from 17 July to 2 August 1945. It set the rules for occupying Germany and for reparations, and put the lands east of the Oder and Lusatian Neisse under Polish administration.
Truman, Stalin and Churchill met at the Cecilienhof Palace; after losing the general election Churchill was replaced on 28 July by Clement Attlee. Germany was to be disarmed, denazified and divided into four occupation zones governed by the Allied Control Council, and each power was to take reparations mainly from its own zone. The trial of war criminals was also announced. During the conference the United States, Britain and China issued the Potsdam Declaration calling on Japan to surrender.
For Poland the key decision placed the lands east of the Oder and Lusatian Neisse, the southern part of East Prussia and the former Free City of Danzig 'under the administration of the Polish State', with the final delimitation of the border left to a peace conference. The conference agreed to the transfer of the German population from Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, which was to be carried out 'in an orderly and humane manner'.
