League of Nations

The international organisation based in Geneva, set up after the First World War to keep the peace. Active from 1920, it failed to stop the aggressions of the 1930s and gave way to the United Nations in 1946.

The League's Covenant formed the first part of the Treaty of Versailles and came into force on 10 January 1920. Poland was a founding member, and the League was responsible among other things for the Free City of Danzig. Its sponsor, President Woodrow Wilson, failed to win over the Senate, and the United States never joined.

The League could condemn and impose sanctions but had no force of its own. Japan left in 1933 after invading Manchuria, Germany the same year, and Italy in 1937, after ineffective sanctions over its invasion of Ethiopia. The USSR, admitted in 1934, was expelled in December 1939 for attacking Finland. The League was formally dissolved in April 1946 and its tasks passed to the United Nations.
